Well done - Ollie Long the Wave Head

Any avid reader of Boards mag may have noticed in Dec issue- page 97 are the results of the final round (of 4) of the UKWA  Four Nations wave sailing competition, held at W Wittering some time in the Autumn in F5-6 conditions.
Second in the Amateur/Masters section was one Oliver Long, who must surely be our Ollie, son of Kim.  The writer of the article (Simon Crowther who finished 4th in that round but won the Amateur/masters title overall so knows what he's talking about) said that with a better wind angle Ollie would have got higher in his jumps and done better.
Obviously a very good performance by Ollie.

Smokers Den

Just wondered if anyone could supply suitable materials to make a smoking shelter under the stairs,
I.E. waterproof plastic boards, screws etc.  If you have something we may be able to use contact

Ken 0773 666 0995,

Alex Rose Trophy and Town Cup

Bognor Regis Yacht Club hosted the Annual Alex Rose Trophy for boats of all classes from the Pagham, Felpham and Bognor Sailing Clubs.  In warm conditions but initially light winds a course was set to take into consideration the low tide and proximity of the rocks. A large entry of twenty eight crews made a clean start and almost immediately the wind began to pick up. Ross Fisher from the Felpham club, coping well with the changing conditions, easily led the fleet home in his Blaze winning by a margin of nearly four minutes. The next seven boats finished within two minutes of each other and Nick Farrer, in a RS600 was placed second just eight seconds ahead of Paul Adams and Mike Hughes in a Hobie 16. Despite several capsizes and a busy time for the safety boat all crews finished the course. With conditions becoming more difficult, the second race of the day, the Town Cup, saw fewer entries but a keenly fought race requiring good tactical skills. With the wind becoming  stronger as the race progressed and the sea choppy, conditions favoured the catamarans and Paul Adams and Mike Hughes completed a good day for them by passing the finishing line in first place. Ross Fisher, also completed a successful day by taking second place and Simon Chaid from Felpham was third. Thanks to Brenda and Joe Elwin for organising a successful event and to John Parsons in the safety boat who was kept busy for the second week running.

Saturday 1st September

On Saturday 1 st September a young disabled sailor, David Morse aged 14, will be sailing from Cowes to BRYC in a trimaran.  His sponsor is the New Earls Court Boat Show and they will be on site at the Club to welcome him ashore at Bognor.   This is the same day as the Birdman Rally and his route to the Club will be past the pier in order to avoid the rocks. A request has been made for some of our sailors to go and meet him somewhere near Selsey Bill and accompany him back to Bognor. Safety boat cover is being provided by his sponsors.

Saturday 8th September

Have a go at windsurfing and sailing. Aimed primarily at the 16 - 25 year age group. Disco and BBQ in the evening. If you know of anyone who would like to have a go, invitations can be obtained from any committee member.

News from DownUnder  - Joe & Brenda
Hi

We are having a great time down here. Spent three fantastic weeks in Australia being entertained and shown around by Joe's family, it was great driving through the bush on empty straight roads for miles and miles!!

We had temperatures in the high 20s/low 30s as we explored the beautiful countryside. Damien took us to Australia Zoo (5 minutes from his home) and we stroked kangaroos and koala bears. Found a nice yacht club at Ballina and Joe spent some time talking to the cat sailors and pilots (there was a sea plane parked outside)!

We came to New Zealand ten days ago and David and Clara Adams has been showing us around some great locations.

We spent the last three days sailing around the Bay of Islands on a 31ft yacht with winds ranging from 25-35 knots - some exciting sailing!

David sends his best wishes to all who remember him.

See you all too soon.

Best wishes
Brenda and Joe
