Commodore News by Nigel Etheridge
We are coming to the end of another sailing year, which has been very successful due to the efforts of Joe Elwin and his sailing committee and the assistance of John Parsons and his rescue boat crew.
Many thanks to Sue Stevens and the kitchen staff who have kept the sailors fed and watered throughout the summer and also thanks to Brian Kay and his bar staff who have worked hard supplying much needed "refreshments" after sailing.
Thanks to everybody involved with the tidy up weekend, and you will notice the club looks much better for this.  Pat, our book-keeper, will be extremely happy with the new look office, now having the benefit of a new desk which was kindly donated by member John Haste.  The hard work has really paid off and the office, together with other areas have benefited from re-organisation.
The new boat shed and store room have now been finished and I must mention the hard work undertaken by Kim Long and Mac Joyner to achieve this.
Christmas is looming and our next big social is the annual Dinner and Dance at The Royal Hotel followed by the annual New Year’s Eve bash.  Please ensure you support these events which are always a guaranteed to be a good night out.
I will not be putting my name forward to stand as Commodore next year and Ken Green has been proposed to take over.  Good look to the new Commodore and committee who I am sure will be successful in keeping the club running so positively.
The club needs the support of its members, Chris Sanford has arranged many successful social nights over the past year, with many more to come; including bands, discos or themed food nights.  The quiz night is back on Wednesday, with the kitchen open for food. The kitchen is also open  Fridays for supper and weekends open from breakfast.  Sunday lunch is now available so come along and try some good home made dishes.

Look forward to seeing you in the club or on the water.
Nigel.

Sailing News by Joe Elwin, Rear Commodore Sailing

We are fast approaching the end of another season and as we review the year we have experienced so many days when we could not sail, there was fog, no wind, but mostly too much wind.  Fortunately we have been able to sail cup races by rescheduling them to run concurrently with the series programmes.  We will add an additional race to the programme – namely Sunday 21st October at 11.00 when we will reschedule the Hago Trophy (you can work up an appetite for lunch!)
Laying up Lunch:  This will take place at 14.00 hrs on Sunday 21st October, please book your place with the bar staff.  The meal consists of a roast lunch and dessert for a cost of £6.
Cadet Week:  The weather was not very kind to us but we did manage to get some sailing in and also trips to Felpham and Pagham in the safety and committee boats.
A reminder to all cadets and their parents to join us for prize-giving (see below).  Many thanks to all who gave their help and support during the week.
Prize-giving – Saturday 10th November at 19.30:  Please come along and join us for what is always a pleasant evening (you never know who will be the recipient of a prize – it may be you!),  Will all those holding trophies from last year please return them to the club (duly polished) by 14th October at the latest.  Can all past winners please have a search for any cups they may still hold as we are missing a few, the  Borley Trophy being one of them.
Tidying up day:  This took place on Saturday 13th October and thanks to those few who helped in this task.
Masts:  We shall be reassembling the mast rack on Saturday 3rd November so help with this would be appreciated. Please can everyone ensure they take their masts down and store on the rack as soon as they finish sailing for the season.  In the meantime and following complaints from our neighbours please would all sailors ensure their halyards are tied away from the mast to eliminate the noise nuisance.  Thank you.
Note:  A halyard was cut recently over a windy night.

Windsurfing Equipment:  At the end of November all unidentified equipment will be removed and disposed from the external rack. Please notify Graham Pereira if you have equipment stored there.
Certificated First Aid and Race Officer Courses will take place during the winter months.  Please see notice board for further details and sign up if you are interested.
A small library of books and DVDs on learning to sail dinghies and boards and how to progress once the basics are mastered are available for loan.

The Galley by Sue
Our first in-house summer season now comes to an end. I hope by now we are at last getting it right. We have had a few hiccups along the way but the thing that has held us back the most was the awful weather but we have done our best. We thank everyone for their support at the themed food nights, BBQ’s and the Summer Ball.
Now that the winter months are ahead we need to put things into place which will bring members into the club. We have some ideas but would welcome any suggestions for our food nights or any ideas for social functions.
Even though the sailing stops in October we will remain open for breakfast and lunch on Saturdays and Sundays.
Saturdays: All day breakfasts and lunch time snacks.
Sundays: Breakfasts and lunch time roasts between 1.00pm and 2.30pm.

Fridays: Supper night offering steaks, specials and old favourites. Kitchen open 6.30pm and last orders 8.30pm.

Rule change.
Our current Accountant has written to advise that although until now he has been a registered auditor, due to the current obligations of training and mandatory procedures he has, along with many small practices, decided to discontinue being a registered auditor. That precludes him from using the term audit on any report. However, that does not preclude him from preparing an “Accountant’s Report” at year end. Please note that an “Accountant’s Report” is still within the requirement for the end of year accounts. An Audit of the accounts would be an additional expense. It is therefore proposed to change rules 14 and 15 to the following:-

Accounts

Rule 14.  The Hon. Treasurer and the Hon. Secretary shall be jointly responsible for keeping proper books of account. At every Annual General Meeting the Hon’ Treasurer shall lay before the club a statement of accounts for the financial year ended on the previous 30th September. A copy of the “Accountant’s Report” shall be affixed to the Club Notice Board not less than 7 days prior to the Annual General Meeting.
All surplus income or profits must be re-invested in the club. No surpluses or assets will be distributed to members or third parties.
If at any time a dissolution order is issued any remaining assets shall be given or transferred to RYA.
Accountant
Rule 15. An independent Accountant shall be appointed on a yearly basis by the General Committee to prepare an “Accountant’s Report” in respect of the end of year accounts for the same year. At any time the General Committee can propose a full audit of the club and it accounts.

Members skills
The club would like to compile a register of those skills which members would be prepared to use in the general maintenance of the club. We already have a number of members who give their time and expertise in areas such as painting, decorating, welding, etc which saves the club considerable money. Any skill which you think could help the club would be welcome.
