NEWSLETTER MAY 2005

We are now into the sailing and social period, and the first two months have brought some very good results, People have rush forth and paid their membership fee’s with great enthusiation which meant that the fear of running into overdraft when the present committee took over was adverted, thank you one and all.

Some very good social events have already taken place with very good support from the members, one notable happening was the Champagne and Canapés afternoon organized by Val and Mike Trenchand which added much needed funds to the club. Cheers for that. Once again the yearly Curry Night organised by Ken Green and Beryl Hughes was a great success.

A little note to all; If you haven’t received you membership card yet please contact me, while on the subject of cards as mentioned in the last newsletter, a more formal attitude to membership is to be taken, with checks being made at regular intervals, therefore sign your guests in please and remember the 6 times rule.

CLUB HOUSE SECUITY; Weekday sailors; please ensure all windows, doors etc. are closed and locked when leaving the building.

Club House renovation.
Vice Commodore, Nigel is organising a work party for the 7/8 May to repaint the exterior of the club. It certainly needs it. All are welcomed with paint and bushes being provided. Many hands make light work so come and slap on some paint.

Kitchen
The kitchen is once more in operation with a good selection of meals and snacks on Friday evenings and during the Weekends, I have had some very good reports on the tucker, so do come and give it a try.

Sailing News
We have had a good start to the season with twelve boats on the water for one of the Spring Series races in the middle of April. We are looking forward to seeing even more of you out there with an aim of twenty boats racing regularly.

Saturday Club starts on 7th May and this will take place on alternate weekends throughout the summer. This is intended for those who wish to improve their techniques for cat sailing; help will be on hand from some of our more skilled sailors. Also on the water experience will be available for those wishing to try cat sailing for the first time. Just come down and see one of the regular cat sailors.
On high water Saturdays from May to August, as from 14th May, we are introducing a Saturday Series Cup race commencing at 14.30 when we look forward to some good sailing followed by a convivial drink on the lawn – Pimms o’clock!
A list of Race Officer duties will be put up on the notice board soon, please make a note of your duty day.

At last the Club’s flagpole will go up again on the morning of Saturday 7th May. Please can as many volunteers as possible come down at 11.00 to help with this task. A big vote of thanks to all those who have helped renovate the mast and for the supply of a new tabernacle.

A housekeeping note – when leaving boats in the boat park please can all sailors tie their main halyards away from the mast to avoid annoying the neighbours with the constant tapping when the wind gets up and also ensure that your boat is tied down. Many thanks.

Some notes from Bruce:
> Please can members wanting lockers or board racks sign their names on the sailing notice board and submit the appropriate fee a.s.a.p.
> Board racing has been slow to pick up this year due to the very light winds – this is when golf takes over I think!
> Those wishing for up to date news can go to the BRYC web site (www.bryc.co.uk) then navigate to ‘news’ on the front page to get an explanation for receiving your e-mail update.

Let’s make this a good season by having as many craft as possible on the water each weekend.
Joe Elwin Sailing Commodore.
