Following a week or two of rain the
Sun came out on us yet again. Most of the water had drained off the course
except for the puddle on the 12th. Eleven teeing off in four three
balls. We had a stranger make up the last three ball which worked out
quite well. It became one of the highest scoring games since the Society
started.
Nearest the pin was neatly taken by Russ with Steve leading the front nine
with 18 points followed by Myles and John on 17, Bruce, Phil and Roger on
15, Brian C 14, Nigel 13, Russ and Lyn on 12 and George on 9.
The Back nine saw Phil with the longest drive. Our Myles returning 22
points, Bruce with 20, Phil 19, Roger, Brian C and a slip from Steve both
on 15, George perked up with 14 John and steady Nigel with 13 Russ and Lyn
on 12.
Myles 39
Bruce 35 Phil
34 Steve 33 Roger
30 John 30
Brian C 29
Nigel 26 Russ
24 George 23 Lyn 23.
It was really encouraging to see over half get more than 30 points with
our young Myles only 13 years old taking the First Prize.
A Good round to prepare for the game against Pagham Society next

Foxbridge April 2008
|
Following Phil's recommendation this month we went to Foxbridge Golf club
which is a very nicely appointed and in tip top condition, nine hole
course, set in the country side near Loxwood. Coffee and bacon rolls were
the order of the day we had a group of 9 players that drove through the
rain and gloom to get there just in time for the rain to stop before our
10.30 tee off.
Following a discussion we played three teams of Texas scramble taking at
least 4 drives from each player,
Group 1 Lyn, Colin and Phil,
Group 2 Brian K, Nigel and John
Group 3 Brian C, Bruce and better late than
never Harry (Welcome back)
Calculating 10% of joint handicaps:= Group 1 had 6 shots,
Group 2 & 3 had 8 shots.
At the halfway mark
Group 1 managed 1 Birdie 6 Pars and 2 Bogies ending up on 38 shots
Group 2 managed 1 Birdie 6 Pars and 2 Bogies ending up on 37 shots
Group 3 managed 0 Birdie 8 Pars and 1 Bogies ending up on 37 shots
Group 1 managed 1 Birdie 5 Pars and 3 Bogies ending up on 37
shots
Group 2 managed 1 Birdie 5 Pars and 3 Bogies ending up on 38 shots
Group 3 managed 0 Birdie 6 Pars and 3 Bogies ending up on 39 shots
Group 1 Gross 75 Net 69
Group 2 Gross 75 Net 67
Group 3 Gross 76 Net 68
All in all a very close game with Brian K Nigel and John smiling
as the captain presented them with the winning
prizes. |

Crookhorn March 2008
|
|
Crookhorn yet again failed to give
us a nice view of the surroundings but the weather was slightly better
than forecast with only a little bit of rain and with fairly strong wind.
The running water on the previous visit had gone but the greens had not
improved.
This was the new captains Drive In
with Brian Clist making an excellent drive with everyone watching and
making a birdie on the first hole. He started as he meant to carry on and
lead the front 9 with 16 points followed by Bruce on 14, Roger and Brian K
on 12, Nigel and Steve on 11 John 7 and Lyn 6.
Hole 10 saw the
Longest Drive
on the fairway with Nigel Yes Nigel, in the first group beaten by Brian K
in the last group. Bruce took nearest the pin on 14th.
Points for the Back nine were
Brian K 15, Bruce 14, John 13, Nigel 11, Brian C 10 Steve 8, Lyn 7 and
Roger 5.
It was a very close game with
three points separating the top three players.

Cathedral Feb 2008
|
The last meeting of the 2007 - 2008
Season, it
was a really glorious sunny day with some playing in shirt sleeves in
February and not being cold ! ! The course was still on the damp side in a
few places but the greens where in excellent condition.
With 1 newcomer Roger Leverton we had 12 members
and three tees with a group of 4 taking an early tee slot and missing out on
the longest drive and nearest the pin.
The front 9 Bruce lead the way on 15 closely followed by Peter on
14,John and Colin 13, Phil 12, Lyn 11, Steve 10, Brian C 9, Nigel 8, Brian
K and Roger on 7 and George on 3.Longest Drive on the 11th saw Phil just taking it from Bruce by a few
yards. With nearest the Pin on 15th Phil being the only one to get on the
green.
The Back nine saw changes in the leader board with Phil on 15, Steve and
Roger 13, Peter 12, Bruce 9, George Brian K and John on 7, Colin 6, Lyn
and Brian C on 5 and Nigel 3.
This all totalled to Phil taking a clean sweep of all prizes the results
being

Tower Jan 2008
|
| What a day, all the rain seemed to
stop for our game - the sun shone it was almost shirt sleeve weather. 9 of
us teeing off on a rain soaked course - There were a few extra lakes on
the course but the sunshine made up for the effort of having to carry our
clubs due to the trolley ban. |
| 3 members actually landed on the
3rd green with Phil winning nearest the pin. On reaching the half way
point the leader board was very close with Brian C, Colin and Bruce on 15,
Al on 14, Brian K, Phil and Steve on 12 - Lyn on 11 and Nigel on
5. |
| The back nine was also close with 4
points separating the top 7 players. The longest drive on the 10th was
taken by Brian K, the only one able to keep it on the fairway. |
Brian C brought home 17 point,
Bruce and Phil on 15 , Colin and Al on 14, Steve and Brian K on 13, Lyn 11
and Nigel doubling his front 9 with 10.
Everyone's handicap remained the same except for Lyn's, which dropped yet
again by half a point from 31.5 to 31. |
All totalling up to
Brian C 32 Bruce 30
Colin 29 Alan 28 Phil
27
Steve 25 Brian K 25

Crookhorn December 2007
|
The numbers swelled to 14 prior to
booking, so 4 tees were finally found at Crookhorn but things were against
us - illness - work - and finally the weather forecast deterred all but
three. The forecast was heavy rain and strong winds. They got the strong
winds right but the rain was not as heavy as expected and the decision to
play was made.
There were other players out on the course together with a lot of water.
The second hole on top of the hill where the wind was strongest was
interesting - but all three managed good drives and all landed in the
middle of the fairway for a change. It is fair to say the conditions were
very very challenging with some temp mats for tees and surface water
on the greens. All in all it was a very even match with Bruce & George
scoring 7 points with Brian K on 5 on the front nine.
So on the 10th the longest drive head to wind was played with George
outstripping the other two and managing to actually reach the fairway and
take the prize.
Then onto the nearest the pin which we won't mention or present a prize
for yet again. The back nine was higher scoring - but not much better with
Brian on 12 - Bruce on 11 and George on 7.
Finally reaching the Club house and a change to dry clothes and working
out the scores.
Bruce on 18 - Brian K on 17 and George 15 so as can be seen it was
always anyones game till the last hole.

Tilgate Forest November 2007
|
This course had been recommended by
several people and we can see why. Squeezed between the M3 and Crawley
Town in the Forest made for an autumnal game with multi coloured leaves
all over with deer, rabbits, squirrels, kids on bikes and members of the
public meandering across the fairways. After the lengthy delay on
starting, we all drove off. It was yet another brilliant day for
golf which saw some of us perspiring and in shirt sleeves in
November!! One Four and two three balls made their way through the
beautiful course seen in all its glory of autumn leaves on the trees and
fairways and hiding our balls with ease. Nearest the pin on the 5th eluded
everyone yet again.
The halfway stage saw that bloke Parsons smiling from ear to ear with 21
points. with Phil 20 and Roger Leverton & Costas on 15. We won't mention anyone
else, Then everyone gathered momentum for the longest drive to all be out
driven by Phil's mate Costas, It was such a long drive some second shots
didn't get past it. The back nine holes gets narrower and narrower as the
scores will reveal. John kept his concentration and came in with a 16
Brian Clist on 15, Phil on 14 and Brian Kay on 12.
All totalled up with a handicap cut of 1.6 John on 37 drops to a 24
again.. Well Done.. That's enough praise back to the rest of us,
Phil with 34, Brian C on 27, Costas 24, Brian Kay on 21 plus the also
attended were 18 points and below.
So Overall winner John Parsons and Longest Drive Costas Demothenis |

Captains Cup 2007
|
| After all the planning and
preparation the day finally arrived and just after sunrise we started to
arrive at the glorious Wildwood Golf course with its superb 3 nine hole
courses. Bacon sandwich and coffee started the proceedings and twelve
members were split into four three balls. The defending current Cup holder
Brian Kay was there to defend the title. I'm not sure how it worked yet
again but the forecast was good and they got it right as well.
We all gathered on the first Tee on course B with dew on the ground and
a deafening silence with the odd bird tweeting in the distance. The
Captain John Parsons struck a very good first ball of the event. All
followed in their groups.
Group 1 John, George and Bruce.
Group 2 Colin, Martin and newcomer Sally.
Group 3 Harry, Lyn and Russ
Group 4 Brian C, Brian K and David
John got the bit between his teeth for a change and after only 9 holes had
scored 18 points as did Russ closely followed by Harry on 14 with Colin
and Sally on 13.
Nearest the pin John - Longest Drive Russ. -
Longest Drive for another society was Brian K - not sure if Brian went to
their prize giving or not.
So back at the Club house to start course C we waited for another Society
to finish teeing off. Things seem to slow down a bit for a while but the
testing course was in very good condition. The wet grass made mid ruff
shots tricky - but practice made perfect for some of us.
Nearest the pin was taken by Martin with Russ taking the longest drive
again.
At the Club house everyone tucked into a very nice and welcome ham, egg
and chips. During the break the cards were checked for regrouping so the
leaders went out last.
John was the clear leader on 35 points followed by Harry on 29 and Colin
and Brian K on 28. Lyn on 26 David and Russ on 25. Could John hold it
together for the last nine holes and keep his 6 point lead. Count back had
to be used to separate those on the same numbers ?
The groups for the last 9 (Course A) deciding holes was as follows
Group 1 George Martin and Bruce
Group 2 Brian C, David and Sally
Group 3 Colin Russ and Lyn
Group 4 Brian K, Harry and John
Course A was more open which saw different results from players. Leading
this nine was Russ on 18 followed by Bruce on 17, Brian C Martin and Sally
all on 15, Harry on 14 and Brian K on 13. Sorry I forgot to mention the
Leader John was on 10 points.
As can be seen from the results it was a very mixed range of points from
all players with Harry being the on consistent player throughout scoring
14 15 and 14.
After the final putt was sunk the scores were validated and added up with
John Parsons winning the Cup with only a 2 point lead over Harry and Russ.
On count back Russ was 2nd and Harry 3rd on 43, Followed by the Defending
Cup Holder Brian Kay on 41 points.
John 45 Russ
43 Harry 43 Brian
K Colin
39 Sally
35
Brian C 35 Bruce 33 David
33 Lyn 30 Martin
27 George 13.
On equal Scores a count back was used - the best last nine, best
last 6, best last 3 then the best last hole working backwards, working
through this process till there is a winner.
All in all a very good day which we hope to repeat next
year. |
|
Avisford Park September 2007
|
Mid week the forecast was rain -
but yet again on the day it was superb weather for golf - Slightly over
cast - a bit of wind with the sun coming out for the last few holes. We
managed 3 - 3 balls with new comer June - Russ's wife and return of Al
read to show us up.
Since our last visit there have been some course improvements (obstacles
created) which made it a bit more interesting. The front nine saw Brian
Kay with 18 points 2 points ahead of Steve on 16 followed by Bruce and
Nigel on 14. Alan, June and Lyn all on 12. Russ on 10 and George on 8.
Longest drive - first group didn't keep it on the fairway, funny that nor
did the second. ( only a few inches off or in the bunkers) So it was left
to the last group where Steve managed to control himself and take the
longest drive.
So with the manicured front half completed - over to the farmers field on
the back nine. Fairways had some odd bouncing due to the lack of rain.
Fairways were shared from time to time. Onto the 13th nearest the green -
sorry pin - First group gave it a miss - So did the last group - but
watched by all - he does like an audience Nigel dropped one on the green
to take nearest the pin.
Knowing the results of the first nine seem to spur some players on - The
leader of the back nine Bruce with 22 points ( a birdie on 16th giving him
5 points helped somewhat.) next was Steve on 20, Alan and Russ on 18 Brian
on 14, June on 13, Nigel 10, George on 9, Lyn on 7.
On checking the score cards certain discrepancies were found yet
again, some diddling themselves out of points on some holes and
giving themselves extra points on others. The Final results
are
On the day Bruce was announced as the winner. On entering the results into
the computer it was found that Steve had omitted a point he was entitled
to. So his score should have been 36. There were 3 other players who's
scores were incorrect in some way or other. Taking the new score for Steve
of 36 and using the Count Back system - Best over last Nine holes Bruce
retained the lead.
The outcome of the day was
Bruce 36 Steve
36 Brian K
32 Alan
30 Russ 28
June 25 Nigel
24 Lyn
19 George

Rookwood August 2007
|
Well what a day Weather couldn't
have been better (Blue Sky a nice cooling breeze) and a very nice course -
a bit tight in places (wherever the ball went) with 10 players 1 - 4 ball
and 2 - 3 balls. Everyone thought it was an excellent course to play and
very nicely priced at £21 per head with a little cafe half way round.
order on the 7th and pick it up on the 9th (I think). One wasn't
best please with the breakfast he had. The bacon rolls/sarny were very
good.
So onto the Practice Green, we all thought they were having a laugh with
it sloping every which way except flat green. We soon found out that it
was about right when we got onto the real greens.
One new comer to watch is Phil who plays off a 5 (luckily he cannot make
many of our games!!) As we had a good number attending we offered
two nearest the pins and 1 longest drive.
At the halfway stage on 17 were Phil and Bruce, Brian Kay on
16, Myles, John and Brian Clist on 14. The longest walk by John
walking back to replay a lost ball on the 7th. The 8th hole was a simple
98 yard hole but still no one managed to stay on the green on their first
ball.
Then onto the next nearest the pin on the 11th A bit more challenging 151
yards and yet no one was good enough to take the prize again. The
interesting course seemed to take a long time which gave us the
opportunity to look around the wonderful scenery. On reaching the 18th Tee
in the tiring and surprising heat, a simple Tee shot over the 'little'
hedge caught a few out with Phil keeping his composure and tapped it over
to take the longest drive of some 200 yards, actually on the fairway.
Concentration obviously flagging for some players with Phil,
Brian Kay and Myles 14, Brian Clist 13, Bruce and John 12, George
11, Nigel 9, Lyn and Russ 6.
All totalled up to
Phil 31, Brian K
30 Bruce
29 Myles
28 Brian C 27
John 26 George
20 Lyn
18
Russ 16 Nigel 15.
All in all a very good day.

West Chiltington July 2007
|
Following almost a month of rain
with some of the Midlands still under water the forecast did not look
nice. Even the score card for West Chiltington has a rule on foggy
conditions, but as usual, it was one thing Lyn had pre-arranged with a
last minute break in the weather which was even making the news coverage
and "Yes the sun Shone". The locals advised us the course was in
excellent condition and they were not wrong. With eight members standing
on the first tee overlooking the fairway valley in front of the club house
veranda with all those eyes looking at you. Some decided on alternative
routes to the pin - some worked - some reloaded but no one got hurt.
As usual last minute changes of decisions over nearest the pin and longest
drives the first group took the pins which were all to be on the back
nine. The undulating course was a bit tight in places with unseen
greens/bunkers/ditches scattered here and there just to make it more
interesting.
At the halfway stage Bruce was leading on 17 points followed closely on 15
by Brian Clist, Martin on 12, and Colin on 10, Brian K on 7 Nigel and John
on 6 and Lyn (who brought the sandwiches - may be she stopped for a picnic?)
on 4 .
Hole 10 was next to the club house for a convenient comfort break. The
layout of the course had fairways running side by side but were tree lined
with playable conditions underneath them.
The nearest the pin on the 11th was taken by Brian Kay yet again the only
one to actually make the green. Then to the 18th for the Longest Drive
Brian Kay took that as well.
On the back 9 Colin and Bruce brought in 19, Brian Clist and Nigel
Etheridge on 17, Brian Kay on 16, John on 15 Lyn with 13 and Martin on 10.
Having confirmed and calculated all the scores the results are
Bruce
36 Brian C
32
Colin
29 Brian K 23
Nigel
23 Martin

HillBarn Worthing June 2007
|
Yet another well organised day
thanks to Lyn which all 11 players enjoyed. The weather was perfect the
course was very good and our Captain was happy.
Teeing off at 10 o'clock worked out very well. Even for Martin, once he had
finished shopping was on time and ready to play on time. A Guest
appearance by a young Myles (Tigger Woods) Wilson, grandson of young Brian
Clist joined us for his first ever full 18 hole round of golf. Having
allocated a 54 handicap was advised he had been having lessons for 18
months. Anyway off we meandered along the first hole with our Captain John
leading the way with an excellent first drive. Nearest the pin on the 5th
hole saw another new comer Peter Savage taking the prize and by the halfway stage with the biggest smile around was John with a staggering 23
points (But thats higher than your normal total) 4 shots behind was Colin
on 19 and young tigger on 18 only 5 players managing to get 10 or more.
The longest Drive was taken but Peter yet again. Who is this new guy we
all ask, but then find out its his home course. Everyone kept any
incidents to themselves so I haven't been able to fabricate any news of
the round.
The back nine scores were very very close with 6 within a point of each
other. Top were Lyn, Colin and Brian Clist on a respectable 16 points,
Myles, Martin and Bruce on 15 points, John on 14, and Peter on 12
The final results being.
John 37 (Handicap dropped to 26) , Colin 35, Myles 33 Brian C on 28,
Following a beer in the club house we all decided the Captains Cup to
be played in October at Wildwood, over 27 holes on the same day.

Cathedral - Chichester April 2007
|
The initial numbers gradually
dwindled to 7 on the day which was ideal golfing conditions except for
just a bit of a strong breeze. Some apparent confusion over Tee times
found the first 4 ball teeing off earlier than planned with the rest
following up at the appointed Tee time.
The course was in good condition but the fairways were in need of some
water - the bounce was sometimes spectacular.
At the halfway mark only 4 points separating the top 5 players Brian Clist
was leading by 1 point on 14 followed by Colin and Russ on 13 points then
Brian K and Bruce on 10 points with Lyn on 7 and the birthday boy
John on 6.
The ever wide eyed lead group didn't notice the Longest drive pin on the
8th so it was moved to the 11th. With Brian Clist nearly reaching the 150
to green pin in the first group which looked to be a winner except Bruce
managed to actually keep one on the fairway for a change and push the
longest drive another 13 yards.
The next highlight was nearest the pin which we are thinking of changing
the rules to nearest the pin on or off the green as no one could actually
stop on the green on the 15th.
The back nine saw an improvement on everyones game Colin managing 18
points with Brian Clist, Russ, Brian K, and Bruce all on 16 points with
Lyn on 14 and John on 12.
Following a beer or two at the club house the final scores were checked
with Colin on 31 Brian on 30 Russ on 29 Brian K & Bruce on 26, Lyn on
21 and the Promise breaking birthday boy on 18.
Following a check of the handicaps all stay the same except Lyn's
which drops to a 32.
For info there are some additional stats available in linked

Cathedral - Chichester March 2007
|
The opening match of the season
started with six of our regular players being joined by Russ Faragher - an
ex member of the yacht club from several years ago. ( somewhat of a
stylish entrance brought to the first T on a buggy. - Only because he had
forgotten his shoes and was running late)
The weather was overcast with a very very strong probably easterly wind
blowing. It seemed we were always playing into a headwind which ever hole
we were on. The first Tee saw a spray of shots varying between the
fairways of the 18th on the Tower and Cathedral and some actually on the
correct fairway.
The conditions underfoot had really dried out and the course was in good
condition enabling the ball to bounce much further to find lots of
water. |
I apparently upset last months
winner by not elaborating very much on his win. So to balance that out a
bit I thought I would expound a little bit for him on this months
write up.
Its not getting to the top of the Leader Board its how long can you stay
there. Colin - last months winner, managed an awe inspiring total of 4
points on the front nine. He became so embarrassed that he took the long
walk of shame back to the club house rather than continue. Claiming he had
a bad shoulder, went and had a hot meal instead. But injured though he
was he did wait several hours for the rest of us to finish. ( He came in
Johns car so he had to really)Anyway back to the not so serious game of golf. At the half way stage
there were two contenders for the lead both on 12 points - Brian C and our
guest Russ. John trailing by 3 points on 9, Bruce on 8, Martin on 7 Colin
and Lyn arguing on 4 points. Well the wind was very very strong.
By the back nine the sun had started to poke through and coats and jumpers
came off which lifted some players Colin had gone back to the club house
looking for sympathy over his arm.
Onto the back nine, the longest drive was set for the 11th hole with (we
will have to widen all the doors for her) Lyn who managed the longest
drive that actually stayed on the fairway.
The nearest the pin was hotly contested with the only ball staying on the
green ( only Just) from Brian C.
Brian and John scoring 12, Lyn recovered with 11, Bruce on 10 Russ 9 and
Martin matched his front 9 with 7. The clear leader on a staggering 24
points & nearest the pin Brian C
John and Russ on 21, Bruce on 18, Lyn - Longest drive 15 Martin 14
and (My arm Hurts) Colin on 4. |
