BRYC Society Reports 2006 2007

February 2007

Well we did it again another nice day for golf. Not a drop of rain but that had already fallen and going was really wet and muddy underfoot. With a trolley ban six of us in two three balls splashed around the course. The leader board at half way was Colin on 18, Brian C on 12 and joint 3rd Lyn & Brian K on 11. and trailing behind were Bruce on 7 and Nigel on 3. On the back 9 Brian K lead the back 9 with 17 with Colin and Brian C on 14, Bruce & Nigel nearly doubling their front 9 scores with 11 and 10 and Lyn slipped to 5.

The resulting score of Colin on 32 , Brian K 28, Brian C on 26, Bruce on 18, Lyn 16 and Nigel 13.

December 2006

Not sure how we did it but yet another glorious day with the winter sun shining which actually caused problems seeing the ball on the back nine. Everyone's handicaps having been adjusted to average adjusted playing handicaps.
Anyway 8 balls were struck off the first tee, the ground was very damp underfoot in places which made play a bit hard going and reading the greens even harder, still no one drowned.  Good planning meant we forgot to decide on nearest the pin and longest drive. but so the first group decide on the 3rd hole for nearest the pin and 6th for the longest drive.
Everyone missed the green, yet again,  the first group Colin - Brian C John and Bruce then looked forward to the longest drive which seemed to be the biggest dribble. which left the way clear for the second group. With Zippy firing the longest Drive onto the fairway. At the halfway stage there was 6 points between the top 6 with Colin on 16 points.

On the 2nd go at nearest the pin, 6 balls landed on the green with zippy taking the nearest.
The sun became the main problem on the back nine as we were hitting into the sun several good shots were lost either because of the sun or the longish grass in the semi-rough.
The back nine resulted in Bruce finding form being 6 points ahead of the next bunch  with 4 points between the next 5 players.
The results Bruce 31 , Colin 28, Brian C 24, Brian K 23,  John 22, Lyn 15, Nigel 14 and newcomer George 7 points.

November 2006

Yet another superb Golfing Day with nine members teeing off in the sunshine. with a good headwind on the first. Three three ball varying their shots, laying up before the ditch, bouncing over the ditch, visiting the field and a few good shots actually on the fairway.
The leader board after 9 holes was Bruce on 14, Colin 13, Lyn 12, Brian C 11 John 10 Brian K 9, Martin 7 Nigel 6 and new comer Alan Read on 5. So yet another close game.
The longest Drive on the 8th was taken by John.
The adversaries Colin and Brain C  battled out the back nine out stripping all others scoring 20 points with Nigel being the nearest on 11 points.
Nearest the pin on the  13th should have been nearest the green as no one landed on the green again.
Colin took the overall winner on 33 points Brian C with 31 Bruce on 22 then John, Lyn and Brian K all on 19 Nigel on 17 Martin on 13 with Al Read a respectable 8 points.
Then to the 19th hole which proved rather disjointed. Due to a miss understanding some stayed at the hotel bar and the others went to the Yacht Club bar which made the after game chat rather difficult.

October 2006

Hill Barn was the venue with two new players Peter Champion and Brian Clist. Peter's 2nd full round of golf in his first Organised game couldn't have been too bad as he was smiling all the way round the course. Brian Clist a visitor enjoyed the camaraderie (Mick take) that has evolved within the group.
Yet another nice day apart from the mist. Teeing off at 10.30 some displaying their new acquisitions and Colin jumping into his buggy - Nearest the pin was set for hole 5, the green was like a reversed magnet with balls going in all directions with only one making the green, Bruce being the proud owner.
At the half way stage Zippy with 21 points was out in front with Steve and Bruce on 16 and Nigel on 14

The longest drive started the second round with Bruce out driving the first group leaving a tempting target for the second group which they were unable to reach. Nigel's use of his new electric trolley obviously helped him round the course and up cardiac hill where he could talk straight away unlike the rest of us ( sorry forgot Colin had the buggy).

Steve managed to hold it together on the back nine returning 21 - which culminated with a Course birdie on the 18th (4 points). Nice one.  Bruce returned 18 followed by  Brian, John and Colin with 14.

Now that you have done all the maths it works out
1st Steve  - 37
2nd Brian K  - 35
3rd Bruce  - 34
4th John - 26
5th Colin and Nigel - 24
7th Brian C  22 - (Visitor)

Captains Cup 2006

Captains Cup was over 36 holes over two days - Friday & Sat 15th - 16th Sept 2006. Yet again the weather was kind to us - well it wasn't raining. The ground was a bit damp from the heavy rain during the week. Eight gathered to challenge for the Captains Cup. The first tee saw a few stray drives with the force 3 - 4 northerly wind blowing the balls off line. Bruce and Steve were equal leaders of the first 9 holes with 12 points with Colin on 11 and Brian on 10 points so it was all to play for. The sun came out and seemed to lift the game for most players. Bruce edging out in front with 29, then with only 3 points separating the next 5 players with Colin on 25 Steve and Brian on 24 and David and John 23.

A few drinks at the club in preparation for the early start at Crookhorn.
It was a bit murky to start with but we could still make out the harbour. The canteen was shut so ASDA attracted the early worms. At 9.18 the competition resumed without one of its number Colin.  By the time we reached the 3rd hole two Nice men in a buggy came along with warm Bacon Sarnies which went down a treat - especially with John who's stomach had been rumbling. ( by the way John if you are reading this have you remembered the spare sandwich in your bag?)
Unfortunately last years winner of the Captains Cup David Farrow had other things he needed to do and left after the front 9 which reflected in his final score.
After the front 9 there was a only 4 points separating the top 4 with a new leader emerging with Brian - 41, John - 40, Steve on 39 and the overnight leader Bruce on 38.

With David leaving we regrouped to two groups of 3 in the now really pleasant weather with tiredness creeping in both physical and mental. John bent down once to often and put his back out and stopped play on the 15th. The scores for the back 9 were Brian and Bruce on 14, Steve on 12 and Lyn on 10.

Yet again we had a visit from the fox on the 15th which calmly waited politely whilst Brian made his Putt, knowing what a softy he is and that he had a spare bread roll. There was a stewards enquiry regarding did the rules cover feeding animals on the course with bread rolls - during deliberated Brian stated that it was OK - as long as Val didn't find out.

The results were ratified and the Winner of the Captains Cup 2006 was Brain Kay on 55 , 2nd Bruce Santer on 52 and Steve Stickland on 51.

A close and enjoyable game at all levels

Saturday 19th August Tower

Forecast was threats of rain and windy. with 8 gathered at the Tee the rain held off and the sun popped out from time to time with the wind making interesting play. The nearest the pin and longest drive were sorted and the first team played off. John Parsons, Nigel Etheridge, Martin White and Lyn Santer who shall from now on be known as the Water babes. Nearest the pin was set for the 3rd - Over the little bit of water an easy par three. All took their second shot off the tee and still didn't get over the water. The second group unaware of this took their shots all over the water and around the green but not actually on it. Play seemed to settle down till the Longest Drive on the 9th All stood up to the Tee and where out driven by Lyn who managed to stay on the fairway. The second group determined to out do the other team drove off with 2 longer drives with Bruce taking the lead.
Half way saw David Farrow on 16 points with Nigel, Bruce, Colin, and Brian all on 15 points. and the second group with Lyn on 11 with Martin and John on 10. yet another close match.

Colin and Bruce kept up the battle for first place with Colin taking the lead on the 15th and managing to retain his 1 point lead finishing on 34.  The water got the better of some on the back nine which reflected in the the results.  Nigel excelled himself this outing with a 3rd Placing on 28 points.

Saturday 15th July - Crookhorn

This was a repeat of the nice weather from June. with a new comer to the gang - David Watts we had eight players. All gathered and to face the ups and downs of Crookhorn. The views were tremendous with Chichester Cathedral to the East, Portsmouth harbour and the isle of Wight to the south and the downs to the north. The nearest the pin had to be rescheduled. The wildlife had seen us playing the previous hole and knew it wasn't safe in the bushes so large as life a Fox wandered across the green whilst we were taking our approach shots. David Watts taking the pot on the rescheduled nearest the pin and the longest drive (onto the fairway) was won by Zippy.
The leader on the day Colin returned 31 , David Watts 30, John P 29 and Steve Stickland 28  followed closely by Lyn with 25.
Using the new handicap system the biggest change is Lyn dropping to a 34 handicap.
A breakdown of results of this years games are now available on the linked pages. This includes everyones handicap for the next game.

Saturday 17th June 2006  Wildwood

What a day, The sun shone and shone as it was the hottest day of the year, the confusion over playing 18 holes out of 27 on the score card. We played the B and C combination. Not a cloud in the sky with such an unknown challenging course ahead. Seven of our group tee'd off along the first easy par 5 hole which was only 465 yards. At least on this hole you could nearly see where you had to get to. Course management became more difficult with each hole - not only distances but unseen ditches - water - hazards etc etc. Straight hitting was the only possible answer. from at least hole 12 everyone was starting to hallucinate in the heat about the first cold beer - or orange juice sitting down in the cool of the excellent club house.
The after game discussion of handicaps resumed from the last meeting and it was agreed to change the handicap system again.

Following research I have created a program that will calculate a proper handicap using the CONGU rules see Link for explanation. This means your handicap may change from time to  time up to the maximum men 28 or ladies 36. rather than 1st reducing by 2 2nd reducing by 1 and last increasing by 1.

Saturday 20th May 2006 - Chiddingfold Golf Course

Considering the forecast - Showers high winds etc it was great to see all nine turning up to Chiddingfold Golf Club. We won't mention the  attempted bank robbery at the ATM enroute - (Some excuse for nearly being late). The earlier rain had cleared leaving a warm overcast day. Then just as we gathered at the first Tee, down came a 'little' shower to dampen the spirits a little (or Ginger beer in one case).  Having split the group into three x three balls with an experienced guide in each.  The first trio started the par 5. eagerly leading the way including a little diversion to the 16th Green instead of the 3rd Tee. which took their breath away and confused John a little bit to see the 1st and 2nd groups had changed playing order in only 2 holes.
The rain had stop and by now and some were playing in shirt sleeves. The course was in good condition with just a few puddles. There were two incidents that could have been serious but thankfully weren't.  Colin a kid at heart sliding down a bank. AND don't mention the sting in the tail to Brian !!!!
The course suited most players with higher average scores being returned. After 9 holes saw the leader board with 5 shots separating the top 5.
 Colin - 20, Bruce - 19, Steve - 16, John & David - 15.
The tables were turned on the back 9 with 4 shots separating the top 5 Steve - 16, Martin & Dave -15, Colin & Nigel 12.

The results with only 2 points separating the top 4  Colin & Steve Joint leaders on 32, With David & Bruce in joint 3rd place on 30.
Finishing the game in sunshine we all looked forward to the first beer  (except John) sitting on the veranda overlooking the 18th hole. Only to find we had to go the the 22nd hole to find a pub that was open - Thanks Martin.  A meeting took place and all manner of things were decided.

22nd April 2006  Portsmouth Golf Club - Crookhorn Lane

A Good turn out in the beautiful sunshine all playing in shirt sleeves at last but still carrying jumpers and waterproofs - Just in case - Nine Tee'd off just before 1pm. The course was in good condition and after a slow start the pace seemed to be good. A very interesting course that only three of us had played before but in the true gentlemanly fashion they acted as guides to the others. Three - three balls going round with occasional sharing of fairways with some errant drives. With the first nine completed scores varied with Brian holding a lead of 3 with 14 points. David in second with 11.  Bruce in third with 10. Nigel finally made the decision to leave his drivers in the bag and use irons.

The back nine offer just as many chances of lost balls as the first. As all agreed it was  a very interesting and challenging course. On reaching the 18th Brian was out in front again scoring 18 points on the back nine. 3 points ahead of Nigel on 15 points - Good decision by Nigel to use his irons. Following all the shaking of hands and signing of cards etc the clear winner of the day by 8 points was Brian. Bruce in second place with 24 Colin in 3rd with 22
Brians handicap drops to 26 and Lyns to 38.

25th March 2006 Hill Barn

A nice turn in the weather meant the thermals could be left off and a jumper was the top item of clothing. It was a bit overcast with only 4 players getting to the tee. All looked promising on the first few holes. the course was in good condition the greens were a bit tricky all went well till the 10th hole when the light rain / mist rolled in. On a tight schedule Martin and John Bailed out of cardiac hill and missed out holes 15 -16 and 17. ( at which point there was only one shot between the leaders). Bruce and Lyn continued over the hill, visibility dropped to about 50 yards which made the long shots interesting. But the visibility became good when the rain started.  John & Martin finished hole 18,  John loosing his ball in the trees but Martin came good and almost putted for a course birdie but folded under the pressure to par the hole.

So the leader Bruce (Only because John didn't finish all holes) looses 2 points from his handicap and Lyn goes to 37.

18th February 2006 Avisford Park

Weather was a bit wet with heavier rain forecast  -  A trolley ban was in force. Six of the 10 probable players turned up and Teed off. The nicely balanced groups teed off in 2 x three ball. Some good some not so good drivers off the first tee in view of the Club house. As the second group had Tee'd off,  screeching tyres were heard coming from the road and when all the steam and spray cleared we saw Martin smile through his car window asking "Am I late". He managed to join us at hole 2.

It rained a bit then stopped - rained and stopped. The club house came in sight after the 9th hole and some of the intrepid golfers decided enough was enough and bailed out of the second nine.

Nigel Steve Bruce & Lyn continued the game but due to the wet ground conditions decided to play the front nine again. It rained a bit and the sun peeped out and it rained and all enjoyed the game - said through gritted teeth.

On checking with the Captain JP  we found that the game is null and void. As we had played the first nine holes twice. So all that frustration - hard work, muddy clothes sore throats, aches and pains was for nothing

28th January 2006  Tower Course

A cold start to 2006 with temperatures just above 0 degrees. With a wind chill factor we couldn't measure except by the colour of Harrys face. Seven diehards teed off in a brisk easterly wind which made the course very interesting with decisions on how to play every shot, playing into, across or directly into wind, which was reflected  in the results. Yes the results will be here at some time but we have to prise them out of John who is rather backward in coming forward with the results.
YES WE ARE GOING TO TELL EVERYONE YOUR SCORE JOHN.
It was so cold one of our numbers decided to call it a day at the 12th . Must have been the thought of a warm fire and a drink or three.
